PERMA is an acronym for a model of wellness, happiness, and healthy living. It's like they say, if you focus on the good, the good gets better. This answers why positive psychology is so important for our wellbeing. We are likely to be more productive and make a greater contribution to society, if we are experiencing higher wellbeing. Martin Seligman who proposed this model heavily focused on 'what goes right in your life' and 'optimal functioning'.
The P in PERMA stands for Positive Emotions like Optimism, Hope, Trust, Pride, Awe, Love, Satisfaction and many other emotions, which open various centres of the brain that are inaccessible when experiencing negative emotions. We become more open to new experiences, learning and developing our ability to grow. It is much easier to experience the world at its fullest and to truly appreciate and be grateful for it, when our brains are in a positive emotional state.
The E stands for Engagement, which basically means being engrossed in whatever you're doing. We often find ourselves being distracted by things that do not really require our attention. This model explains how being in the 'Flow' increases our chances at leading a successful and happy life. What is being in the flow? Flow includes the loss of self-consciousness and complete absorption in an activity. In other words, it is living in the present moment and focusing entirely on the task at hand.
The R stands for Relationships and moreover the positive ones which help us grow better, smile better and live a little better. Our social environment has proven to play a role in prevention of cognitive decline. The healthier and stronger our relations with the people around us are, the merrier we become.
The M stands for Meaning. Have you ever wondered about the purpose or meaning of your life? Well, you are not alone. Having a purpose in life helps individuals focus on what is really important in the face of significant challenge or adversity. A sense of meaning is guided by personal values, and people who report having a purpose in life live longer and have greater life satisfaction and fewer health problems.
The A in PERMA stands for Accomplishments or Achievements. A sense of accomplishment is a result of working toward and reaching goals, mastering an endeavor, and having self-motivation to finish what you set out to do. This contributes to wellbeing because individuals can look at their lives with a sense of pride
Now that you know what the PERMA model is, we hope you will try to apply it in your daily lives!!
